As co-founder of 19 KAREN Contemporary Artspace, and as its Gallery Director from 2008-2010, I curated exhibitions, produced publications, and hosted career development programs including art lectures, networking nights, mentorships, and residencies. During my time at the gallery, I focused on exhibiting and representing cross-disciplinary and experimental Australian and international artists.
Located at Mermaid Beach, the 380 sq.metre gallery was established in 2008 by myself and art collector Terri Lew to provide emerging and leading artists with on-going exhibition resources and gallery representation. Our programs acted as a vital stepping stone for many Queensland artists, who have since gone on to secure international opportunities and representation that stemmed from their time with 19 KAREN.
The site itself was initially a run-down factory with no proper roofing or lighting, and was set for demolition that year. Instead, through this philanthropic partnership, we were able to salvage the space by transforming it into a modern white cube gallery that spanned five exhibitive sections.
I vacated my role at 19 KAREN in May 2010 to take on a full-time role within the Gold Coast City Council’s arts and culture department. The gallery remains in operation under a separate management and showcase structure.
