LIGHTMARES was a professional development program I curated at 19 KAREN Contemporary Artspace from May-June 2010. A first of its kind by a Gold Coast commercial gallery, the eight-week project involved on-site studio residencies, a group exhibition, masterclass and workshop, artist talks, and two side events at Parkrise Street Art at Surfers Paradise Festival and Semi-Permanent Design Conference.
For LIGHTMARES, I commissioned Berlin street artist Mymo to travel to the Gold Coast, where she spent two months creating new work alongside nine local artists whose practices ranged from painting, mixed media, kinetic sculptures, textiles, illustration and street art. The gallery studio residency resulted in a group show comprising ideas and skills-sets shared during the collaboration.
A panel talk was also held at 19 KAREN featuring Mymo, Anthony Lister and Randal Breen to discuss social and political issues surrounding local and global street art. To end the program, Mymo presented a lecture at Semi Permanent Design Conference in Brisbane.
LIGHTMARES received financial support from City of Gold Coast and Arts Queensland via the Regional Arts Development Fund.
