Rabbit & Cocoon – 23 Hillcrest Ave. Miami Gold Coast
Based at Miami, Gold Coast, Rabbit & Cocoon (now known as Miami Marketta) was a creative precinct that provided spaces and resources for motivated people to run creative practices, businesses, and events from 2011-2014.
Rabbit & Cocoon was established in November 2011 by myself, Emma Milikins, and Jolie Hertzberg. Through a philanthropic partnership, we transformed and self-funded a derelict 14-warehouse property off the Gold Coast Highway into a creative hub of arts studios, design labs, a fashion incubator, coworking spaces, a music rehearsal space, a radio station, multi-event space and a cafe.
A year later, we ran a successful Pozible crowdfunding campaign, raising $12k from community donations to build new spaces, buy exhibition and film equipment, produce marketing materials, and design an interactive website that promoted resident artists and programs in collaboration with institutions, universities and creative groups.
After three years managing the precinct’s community programs and cementing the longevity of our core projects, we stepped down from our directorial duties in 2014 to focus on our own careers. The precinct continues to trade today as Miami Marketta and remains a dynamic hub for artists, entrepreneurs and small business owners, and a major arts and culture destination for locals and tourists alike. THE WALLS, founded at Rabbit & Cocoon by one of our studio residents Rebecca Ross, has since branched off into its own gallery artspace at Miami.
