Rabbit & Cocoon – 23 Hillcrest Ave. Miami Gold Coast
Based at Miami, Gold Coast, Rabbit & Cocoon (now known as Miami Marketta) is a creative precinct that provides spaces and resources for motivated people to run creative practices, businesses, and events.
Rabbit & Cocoon was established in November 2011 by fashion designer Emma Milikins, artsworker Jolie Hertzberg and myself. Through a philanthropic partnership with the land owner, we transformed a derelict 14-warehouse property off the Gold Coast Highway into a hub consisting arts studios, design labs, a fashion incubator, coworking spaces, a music rehearsal space, a radio station, multi-event space and a cafe.
We ran a successful Pozible crowdfunding campaign a year later and raised $12k from community donations to renovate our spaces, purchase lighting and filming equipment, design and produce marketing materials, and build a website that featured our resident artists, regular programs and events, and profiled visiting artists, as well as local and national collaborations within the arts and culture sector.
After three years managing the precinct’s community programs and cementing the longevity of our signature projects, we stepped down from our directorial duties in 2014 to focus on our own careers.
The precinct continues to trade today as Miami Marketta and remains a dynamic hub for artists, entrepreneurs and small business owners, and a major arts and culture destination for locals and tourists alike. THE WALLS, founded at Rabbit & Cocoon by one of our studio residents Rebecca Ross, has since branched off into its own gallery artspace at Miami.
